Run with the Pack! Saturday, February 9, 2019


Register now for the 10th annual Timberwolf 5K, sponsored by Mike Dunn.  The 5K helps 25 Northwood athletic teams fund raise the gap between IUSD funding and the cost of the program.  Did you know that IUSD only funds in-season coaching, officials and transportation?  But the rest is up to us.  Teams fund raise for off-season coaches, extra in-season coaches, uniforms, equipment, training, websites, awards, banquets and more.  Run with the pack and support your favorite team on Saturday, February 9, 2018 and stay for the pancakes.

Come and hear about a career in Medical Sales from Mr. Tim Bass. Mr. Bass is a graduate of Servite High School and Loyola Marymount where he played 4 years of water polo. He has worked in sales for several Fortune 500 companies including 3M and Stryker Corporation.  He is the owner of Baar Surgical which has sold spinal implants to orthopedic and neurosurgeons in the greater Orange County area for the last 20 years.  We service almost 10 companies as independent distributors and assist the surgeons we work within the operating room during the use of our products.

            Career: Pharmacist

Come and hear about a career as a Pharmacist from Dr. Lawrence Brown. Dr. Lawrence Brown is the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and a Professor of Pharmacoeconomic and Health Policy at the Chapman University School of Pharmacy. He completed his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of the Pacific and completed his Ph.D. in Social and Administrative Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota. He began his career as a U.S. Air Force Pharmacy Technician and has worked in chain, independent, compounding, ambulatory care, and hospital pharmacies.

2019 STUDENT SACRAMENTO TRIP - DEADLINE DECEMBER 5TH

Juniors and seniors: Each year the PTSA sponsors 5 students on a trip to Sacramento. The purpose of the trip is to meet with state lawmakers and staff to express public education concerns and ideas, hear from a variety of experts on state education policy and network with IUSD students, administrators, and school board members. Students attending the trip will go through several information gathering meetings and will be expected to research on their own. This is an exciting opportunity! If you are interested, please visit  http://www.northwoodptsa.org/advocacy to fill out an application.  The selected students must be PTSA members before joining the trip.  You may join PTSA by filling an online form (no service fee) or bringing the attached form to the front office by December 5, 2018.  If your parent is already a PTSA member, then print out/fill out a membership form, attach a $5 check, and drop off in the PTSA Membership mailbox in the front office.  Applications are due to the front office by December 5th, 2018.

2019 SACRAMENTO SAFARI TRIP

PTSA Members: Each year the PTSA sponsors 2 adults (parents) on a trip to Sacramento Feb. 25-26th 2019. The Grad Night Committee meeting for Tuesday, November 27 has been cancelled. The next meeting will be Monday February 4, 7:00 pm at NHS, room 906. (this is a date change from Tuesday February 5)

Come and hear about a career as a Dietician from Ms. Jigna Mehta. Ms. Mehta is a registered Dietician and a nutritionist who graduated from Loyola university, Chicago. She has been a dietitian for the last 13 years and has been working with Kaiser Permanente (Irvine).

Parent Educational Night


Substance Abuse and Vaping / Stephan Lambert

The Northwood PTSA invites you to attend a presentation by Mr. Stephan Lambert, the Orange County Department of Education's Prevention Coordinator, on vaping and other issues regarding substance abuse. Studies show that large numbers of our youth are using these substances and this presentation is intended to educate parents on the dangers of vaping and substance abuse.

Stephan Lambert is the Prevention Coordinator at the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE). He has ten years of experience in substance abuse prevention, positive youth development, developmental asset building and community organizing. In his role at OCDE, he supports schools and districts with alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention services.

When: Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at 6:30 p.m.

Where: Northwood High School Media Center.

Mr. Hai Liang. Mr. Liang has served in numerous Army bases within

the U.S. and in countries such as Germany, South Korea, Bosnia, Iraq.

He has served in various positions such as a tank commander, platoon

sergeant, program manager and operations manager.

He has received numerous medals, including the NATO Medal,

Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal

NHS PTSA was able to provide the luncheon to the whole student body on this important day because of your generous support.  “What is your Why?”- was the theme this year and we are thankful for this time that NHS takes out of the traditional schedule in an effort to provide an environment that supports the whole child.

PTSA Meeting on Nov 13th

We will also have a special presentation by our own IPD officer, Officer Tanya Ayalde. Officer Ayalde is the designated School Resources Officer for Northwood High School. She will speak about the various types of support that IPD provides to our school and students. She will speak about vaping and will show case some vape machines.

It is a great opportunity to meet our new assistant principal Kortney Tambara and welcome her to Northwood High School.

We will have a special presentation by Megan Keller, Northwood High School's Wellness Coordinator from IUSD's Prevention and Intervention Department.  Ms. Keller is a Mental Health Specialist, specializing in crisis intervention, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, family conflict, trauma and resource and referral.  She will be speaking about her role at Northwood, mental health trends among Northwood students, and basics on how to develop resiliency and supportive environments for your children.

Student Directory is Going Live

We are pleased to inform you that our 2018/19 Northwood High school online directory is ready to go live. Connecting with fellow Northwood families as well as faculty and staff has never been easier through the site or the directory spot app and by becoming a PTSA member. To those of you who already signed up, thank you for supporting PTSA. The directory will be at your fingertips shortly.

If you have not renewed your PTSA membership yet, or are new to the school, please do so by Monday, Oct 1, 2018 and we will be sure to add you to the approved directory User list. Approved users will receive an email to set up their user-id and password. Returning PTSA members will also be asked to reset their log-in credentials for continued online security.

Fraud Alert


Unfortunately, there is a rash of fraudulent emails circulating asking volunteers to buy gift cards to the school. Please remember to be vigilant and to not make any electronic payments or transfers to anyone. These emails have also been sent to parents on the behalf of school PTAs requesting gift cards. Please know that PTAs will never ask a parent to donate gift cards.

Christmas Tree Fundraising for Baseball Team

With the Holidays right around the corner, the Northwood Boys Baseball team is once again sponsoring its Christmas tree sales fundraiser.  The trees - Noble Firs and Douglas Firs - are typically sourced from the Pacific Northwest and are cut two days before shipping. We are also selling fresh and fragrant wreaths, garlands and Poinsettias to help round-out your holiday home decorating.
·       Please consider donating a tree to Irvine’s own Families Forward, helping families in Orange County that are homeless or at risk for becoming homeless.  


Purchases will be available for pick-up on Saturday, December 1st from 9am to 1pm behind building 1400 (or request to have your NHS ballplayer/salesperson deliver your Holiday décor to your home or office).

Reflections Contest

Heroes Around Me” is the theme for the 2018-19 Reflections Art Program (see attached promotional flyer)All students are invited to participate and submit original artwork in one of six areas: Dance/Choreography, Literature, Photography, Film Production, Music Composition, and Visual Arts.
