Grad Night 2019 - Beat the price increase!

Graduation is approaching fast. Get your Grad Night ticket before the April 1 price increase.
Grad Night is not just a dance, it's a chance for you to spend the night of graduation celebrating with all your fellow graduating seniors. Together you can dance, play games, do activities, watch entertainers, eat great food, relax at the coffee shop, take pictures and much more.

Irvine Parent Education Program (IPEP) - Spring Workshops Invitation

IUSD Announcement: We are so excited to offer more informative workshops for the spring! We have many great workshops and presentations set up for the parents of Irvine students. Below you will find the link to our Canvas page where there is much more information about all our Irvine Parent Education Program (IPEP) classes for the spring season.
Irvine Parent Education Programs (IPEP) are FREE educational workshops offered to Irvine parents throughout the school year. Our goal is to empower parents with the skills and strategies necessary to become active participants in their child’s education. IPEP offers a variety of workshops focused on topics important to parents of IUSD students. Experienced instructors and district-level representatives facilitate the interactive workshops, engaging participants in conversations and hands-on activities. We invite you to register for one or more of the IPEP Spring Parent Workshops on our IUSD Canvas Page (link below).
These workshops are popular and space is limited, so please only sign up for workshops you are certain you will be able to attend.

Career Lunch Presentation for Students – Genetics / Ms. Maya Thangavelu

When: Wednesday, March 22, 2019 at lunch time
Where: Room 1035
Career: Genetics

Come and hear about a career in Genetics. Maya Thangavelu completed elementary, middle and high school in Southern India. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Delhi (India). She then did an internship in Cytogenetics at the Institute of Human Genetics in Aarhus, Denmark. Following the internship, she obtained an M.S. in Genetic Counseling from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, She then worked for three years in India as a Cytogeneticist, setting up a Cytogenetics laboratory and performing diagnostic services. She Then joined Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, for a Ph.D. in Cytogenetics. This was followed by a Post Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Chicago. She was Director of Cytogenetics at Northwestern University in Chicago. She then moved to the West Coast and was a Clinical Cytogeneticist at Genzyme Genetics, a diagnostic laboratory with a number of labs around the country.  As of 2012, Maya has been Director of Cytogenetics at NeoGenomics Laboratories, a cancer diagnostic lab.

Career: Sales & Marketing



Come and hear about a career in sales and marketing. Ruth Ann Fleming works at Bio-Rad Laboratories as the VP, Global Strategic Partnerships.  Bio-Rad is a biotech company that is headquartered in Northern CA, but there is a location with about 500 employees in the Irvine Spectrum.  The company makes/sells diagnostic products and services that are used by hospitals, reference labs, pharmaceutical companies, and large food companies.  Ms. Fleming has held various sales and marketing positions in this industry for the last thirty years.  In college I studied biology and chemistry and have since obtained an MBA.

Please make a note of changes for March PTSA meeting. Meeting on March 12 is postponed to Tuesday March 19th  and the new location is Career Center instead of rm 906. We will hold an election for Executive Board members. All the nominees please be present for the election.

Parent Education Night - Thank you!


Thank you to all the parents who attended last Tuesday’s presentation. It was very informative with great lessons to learn. If you are interested to know more about the Winners Vocabulary, please find Mr. Jeff Eben’s presentation attached.

 A Huge Thank you to our VP of Programs, Anita Raman. Speical thanks to ASB and the ASB Director, Mr. Zeff Deena and for NHS administration for making this event a possibility.

Pride of the Pack Breakfast

Last Tuesday morning, Northwood High School PTSA hosted breakfast to all the students who received the Pride of the Pack award.  
PTSA would like to extend its gratitude to our Orchard hills neighbors ,  Pavillions and Peet’s coffee for donating pasteries, center pieces for the tables and coffee for the event.
We would also like to thank Jennie Kim and all the volunteers who attended the event. A special thanks go to Patty Schell and Lupe Howard the Hospitality Chairs.

Regional Admission Counselors of California (RACC) Night for Sophomores and Juniors

On Thursday evening, March 28th, there will be at approximately 30 admission counselors from both private and public out-of-state colleges and universities in the Northwood Theater. They will give a brief presentation on their institutions and will host a Mini-College Fair in the Media Center directly following the presentations.
Presentations begin at 6:00 pm, Mini-Fair at 7:00 pm. All sophomore and junior students and parents are invited to attend. See Mrs. Smith or Ms. Kim for more information.

STAYING CONNECTED TO TODAY’S TEEN


The Foundation of Better Mental Health and Well-being
The City of Irvine, in partnership with the Irvine Prevention Coalition, is pleased to sponsor well-known adolescent psychologist Dr. Jerry Weichman to lead a community discussion about the impact positive social relationships have on a teenager’s mental health and physical well-being. Dr. Jerry Weichman is a licensed clinical psychologist, adolescent specialist, and parenting expert.

When: Wednesday, March 27 from 6pm to 8pm.

Scholarships For Seniors - NHS Athletics Boosters

The Northwood Athletic Boosters is pleased to offer three $500 scholarships annually:
· Mike Dunn Athlete of the Year – female
· Mike Dunn Athlete of the Year – male
· Rick and Sharon Crowell – Technology and Service Athlete

The on-line scholarship application forms are open now and close on Monday, March 25, 2019. Scholarship winners will be contacted by prior to Distinguished Timberwolf Night on Wednesday April 24, 2019.

NHS Athletics Boosters Mike Dunn Scholarship: Female and Male Athlete of the Year, $500 each
Mike Dunn, presenting sponsor of the Timberwolf 5K, is proud to sponsor two $500 scholarships (1 female/1 male) for seniors who will be attending college in the fall. The scholarships are designed to reward NHS athletes that have exhibited outstanding community/volunteer service. Qualified applicants must be a current member of the NHS Athletic Boosters, must have competed for Northwood High School athletics and participated in significant community/volunteer service. The emphasis will be on the community/volunteer service.

NHS Athletics Boosters Rick and Sharon Crowell Scholarship - $500

In commemoration of the late Rick and Sharon Crowell, the NHS Athletic Boosters Club is proud to sponsor a $500 annual scholarship for an NHS senior who will be attending college in the fall, has participated on an NHS athletic team, and has experience or a strong interest in web design, technology including videography. The scholarship is also designed to reward NHS athletes that have exhibited outstanding community/volunteer service. Qualified applicants must have competed for Northwood High School athletics for four years and have a clear interest in web design and technology. The applicant must also have a record of community/volunteer service.

Irvine Unified Council PTA Scholarship – Seniors Only


Seniors, each year Irvine Unified Council PTA offers an annual Scholarship to IUSD Senior Scholars. IUCPTA awards a $500 scholarship to a top qualified Nominee at each IUSD High School. Please find the application form on the Irvine Council website below:


As noted in the Application, nominees must be PTSA/PTA members. They may register at the time of application to ensure eligibility. The Principal and one Teacher at each Unit may be asked to help choose the Scholarship recipient. All submissions are due APRIL 1, 2019. No late submissions will be accepted.
