PTSA ADVOCACY

Advocacy for NHS Juniors and Seniors:

Every year, each Irvine high school sponsors 5 students to take a trip to Sacramento. This year it will be a virtual conference and will take place the week of March (final dates and times TBD).

The purpose of the conference is to meet with state lawmakers and staff to express public education concerns and ideas, hear from a variety of experts on state education policy and network with IUSD students, administrators, and school board members. Students attending the virtual conference will go through several information gathering meetings with IUSD school leadership and will be expected to research on their own. This is an exciting opportunity!

If you are interested, please fill out the application attached (including teacher recommendation) and return it to Dr. Roach by January 6th. Applications are also available in the front office.

Advocacy for NHS Parents:

SAVE THE DATE! Sacramento Safari 2021 Goes Virtual

Seeking Parent Speakers for IUSD Career Exploration Program

This year, all of the high schools within IUSD are partnering together to create the "Pursue Your Passion" career exploration program via Zoom. Just like the NHS career speaker program, it will give students the availability to connect with industry professionals and gain insight on the different industry occupations. It will also give our Northwood students an opportunity to participate in the series with a broader speaker base to draw from.

If you are interested in sharing your experiences with the students, please complete the form here

For more info, please email VP of Programs, Ginger Kawanami, at ProgramsPtsaNhs@gmail.com.

NHS Athletics Boosters

“Finter” sports (Cross Country, Football, Boys Volleyball, Girls Volleyball, Boys Water Polo and Girls Water Polo) season begins Monday, November 2nd.  Voluntary parent donations are key to providing additional coaches, tournaments, equipment, athlete awards, and other various costs that go beyond what IUSD funds for each program.  We invite parents of athletes in “finter” sports to support their programs by donating to NHS Athletics Boosters Club here.

All other spring sports will continue to run workshops until their season begins on January 25th. Families can also donate for these programs to cover the coaching costs for their program’s workshops if so desired.

Visit the NHS Booster website for more info.

PTSA Meeting

Coming September 2020

Message from the Grad Night Committee

Due to the current restrictions of in-person, large group gatherings, we are saddened to announce that our originally planned PTSA-sponsored 2020 Grad Night celebration, of which was to occur following the graduation ceremony on June 4th, is cancelled.  We are currently working to process refunds for all tickets purchased and donations submitted to date. You do not need to take any further action at this time, as your refund will be processed automatically; however, please note that this process may take some time to issue all refunds.  Should you have any questions regarding your refund, please contact gntreasurerptsanhs@gmail.com, and if you have other questions or concerns, please contact Gradnightptsanhs@gmail.com.

Please know that while the health and safety of our graduating Senior Class remains our highest priority, we recognize how meaningful it is for them to have a celebration to recognize this important milestone in their lives.  While the PTSA will no longer be hosting this traditional event, a group of Grad Night Committee parents are currently exploring alternative options for a privately organized, rescheduled 2020 Senior Celebration, to potentially occur in July. Our goal is to create a safe opportunity for the 2020 Seniors to connect in person, enjoy some time together as they celebrate each other, and conclude this chapter of their Northwood High School journey before embarking on their paths ahead.  If you are interested in having your Senior participate in this event, and/or are willing to help in the planning of the event, please contact us at 2020seniorsnhs@gmail.com.  In the interim, please consider reserving your Grad Night ticket refund, and sponsorship support, to contribute towards this new event. More details on such will follow in the upcoming weeks. Thank you!

Appreciation for NHS Teachers, Administration and Staff

Thank you to our teachers, administration and staff at NHS for setting up communications so quickly with our students and families. Keeping connected is so important during these day to day and ever evolving times. Some districts are struggling to continue instruction, but the hard work put into distance learning helps our students to continue the semester as best as possible. We are lucky and grateful for you all.

Remembrance of Ali Gholamrezaei

IPSF Innovative Grants Program Award - Northwood High

Letter from IPSF Director of Marketing & Communications, Kellie Pendergest:

Good morning!

I wanted to extend our congratulations to your school community! As you may have already heard, your school received a grant award as part of IPSF’s 2020 Innovative Grants Program. The grant recipients were recognized last week at a special reception in their honor. Your school received the following grant:

Northwood High School - $4,716.8

Hope Squad: Preventing Youth Suicide

Megan Keller

A peer-based suicide prevention program to reduce self-destructive behavior and youth suicide by training, building, and creating positive culture change in schools and communities.

Please help in spreading the news to your PTA board and sharing with your parent community when possible. IPSF grants are funded through corporate sponsors and the Parents Appreciating Teachers and Staff (PATS) program. Parents who purchase PATS are helping to promote innovation in classrooms across the district and make grants like this possible. We have launched the PATS campaign and appreciate your help in making that connection so that your parents understand how their support benefits your school directly! PATS are available now at www.ipsf.net/pats.

To learn more about this grant and how your school will implement it, I would encourage you to contact the teacher(s) listed above and/or your principal for more information.

Thank you!!!

Kellie
