NHS Library Book Drive

NHS Library Book Drive

BOOKS are HERE and Shelves are Packed!!!

Thank you to all the generous donors who have purchased books or made cash donations to the library to increase the book collection at NHS. The books are arriving, and the shelves are beginning to get packed.

With funding from parents (Book-Drive), PTSA (GiftstoSchool), and an IPSF grant, over 1200 books have been ordered and 857 have been received to date. Students may now check out the books by following the instructions to the link here.

Our appreciation goes to our new librarian, Peter Fatzaun, who has been spearheading the effort to revamp the library this year by adding high-interest young adult novels, graphic novels, manga, and non-fiction titles. It takes a concerted effort to fund and build a library collection and to keep it current and relevant to our student population. Northwood lags the other Irvine high schools in the number of books and titles available for circulation but now we are building on! If you haven’t had a chance to donate a book and would still like to do so, please donate here.

Here are some before & after photos:

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week (May 3-7)

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week (May 3-7)

Around the nation, during the first week of May, we celebrate our educators. Please remember to give a shout-out or a note of gratitude to your teachers and staff. Educators play a vital role in the lives of children. It’s a job that requires lots of patience, understanding, and a lifetime of dedication. For all the hard work and continued effort that our teachers and staff put in every day, it’s only right that we let them know how much they are appreciated!

Dear NHS Staff, THANK YOU for gifting the NHS students with the magic of YOU every day as you provide a supportive, inspiring, and welcoming environment here at Northwood high. -- With gratitude, NHS PTSA

Thank you to NHS Hope Squad

PTSA appreciates Hope Squad advisors and students for taking the time to come to our April PTSA meeting and share information about the program! It was a very helpful presentation as we learned about this program that NHS offers and how it works on building a support community for all its students.  We learned more about the mental health resources available on campus for our students and ways parents can be proactive and supportive of their student’s mental health.

“PACK THE SHELVES” Book Donation Drive

WE ARE PACKING THE SHELVES!!!!  Thank you to our generous NHS community for participating in the PTSA Book Drive! So far, we have received donations to purchase over 100 new books for the school library and have added even more titles to the website.  You can still help us PACK THE SHELVES by donating here

Why make a donation to the PACK THE SHELVES CAMPAIGN?

  • Strong book collections have a positive impact on students and achievement
  • To inspire students to try something new and provide opportunities to explore reading beyond the walls of the classroom
  • Support the diverse developmental, cultural, social and linguistic needs
  • Having books that are not school required reading encourages students to become lifelong learners
  • Having print books can keep kids off the screens for a while, and help students find comfort and escape in an anxious world

All books are library bound, guaranteed and shelf-ready to last years for our students. You can also choose to donate a set dollar amount donation which will be used to purchase monthly new releases, award winning titles and classics. 100% of the donations will go towards purchasing high quality books for Northwood.

Athletics Boosters

From the desk of Athletics Boosters, following is the spectator policy to note for the season:

“We are extremely excited and feel fortunate just to have an athletic season this year.  As we do so, please know that we are under a tremendous amount of scrutiny, with very specific guidelines we’ve been asked to follow by the state, county, CIF, and the Pacific Coast League.  Please make note of a few spectator reminders below.  We need your participation and support in order to allow us to keep having public events with spectators in attendance.  Recognizing that sports are a privilege for our community, our new saying for staff, students and parents has become, “Don’t be the reason we lose our season!”

Tickets are required to attend all athletic events.  No exceptions will be made for additional spectators beyond the allotted tickets.  Tickets are for members of the same household as the student participant and should not be shared.

All spectators are required to wear a mask through the duration of the competition.  Should a spectator require an accommodation to remove their mask, advanced notice should be provided so specific seating arrangements can be made so as to not impact other spectators.  Spectators who remove their masks without an accommodation will be asked to leave and may not be allowed at future events.

There are currently no away spectators at events held at locations other than stadiums.  In the circumstances that away spectators can attend, tickets will be provided in advance.  We discourage spectators from parking or sitting in adjacent areas just outside the athletic venues to watch events when away spectators are not allowed.

Spectators should locate and sit in the designated seating locations at the venue.  In IUSD, these locations are designated by a sticker.  Seats have been placed in pairs, and both members of the household should sit together.”

NORTHWOOD ATHLETICS UPDATE!

EXCITING NORTHWOOD ATHLETICS UPDATE!

It’s official!  Athletic competition is returning to Northwood.  Irvine Unified School District is committed to using all its tools to help our student athletes have competitive play March to May 22, 2021.  We will be updating you frequently, because the IUSD and Northwood teams are “building the plane while its flying!” so to speak. Your patience is required.

Key Highlights:

  • On February 18th, the California Department of Public Health released updated guidelines which approved athletics to participate outside of their assigned colored tier following specific rules.
  • In order for student-athletes to follow the updated guidelines, which are less restrictive, the district needs to have a signed informed consent waiver for every athlete. The informed consent can be found here and the waiver can be found here. An athlete cannot train or compete following the less restrictive guidelines until NHS has a signed waiver on file at the school.
  • As of right now, all competition must be outdoors. The state/county/district and NHS are working on options/ideas for the indoor programs.
  • The district is actively working on a spectator policy as well.
  • Since we are essentially cramming three season of sports into four months, NHS athletics will continue to be flexible and fluid in scheduling and playing practices and games. Please have patience as things may need to change quickly for multiple reasons.
  • NHS Athletics administration is currently working with the district to see what options we have in regards to athletes playing multiple sports simultaneously.  We hope to have some more information soon.

Questions may be emailed to our Northwood Athletic Directors (please send to both, as you can imagine, things are hectic):
